==What is a die shot==

A die shot is a photograph of an integrated circuit's die. The die is semiconductor which contains the chips functionality. This is usually a tiny thin piece of silicon embedded in the chips package. It can be anywhere from the size of a grain of sand to a couple inches, and can contain a single transistor or billions. For quality die shots, photos need to be taken through a microscope, and often have to be [[wikipedia:Image stitching|stitched]] together from many images, in a lengthy process. Die shots are taken for a various reasons including marketing the product, a form of art, or [[wikipedia:reverse engineering|reverse engineering]] the circuit. Most die shots are produced by the chips manufacturer/designer, but there is also a small community of photographers.
